Job Purpose Statement

Our responsible investment team works on a range of specialist responsible investment strategies whilst also providing research to and facilitating ESG integration across mainstream strategies. Globally the business has responsibility for ~US$36billion in responsible investment strategies, reflecting segregated mandates and pooled funds including the US, UK and European Social Bond Funds as well as the Ethical UK Equity strategy. Columbia Threadneedle is a committed signatory to both the UK Stewardship Code and UN sponsored Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) of which we were a founder. This role offers the opportunity for an experienced professional to make a key contribution to the global responsible investment team's delivery of effective responsible investment research, analytics and engagement. There is significant scope for ongoing development through the opportunity to participate in all the team's activities and exposure to and training in all aspects of our work would be provided to the successful applicant. In terms of core responsibilities, the role would require the successful applicant to focus primarily on delivering effective responsible investment analytics, undertaking research and analysis as required, to inform communications to internal and external stakeholders. Working in collaboration with international colleagues, portfolio managers and analysts, the successful applicant will have particular responsibility for data acquisition and manipulation to help evidence the team's responsible investment credentials as well as the preparation of original and articulate content relating to responsible investment in practice.  The role will also provide the opportunity to help support investment decision making through the delivery of responsible investment analytics to front-line investment teams, as well as to help prioritise engagement activity in order to help deliver effective stewardship of assets under management. The role would particularly suit an enthusiastic, pro-active self-starter with a passion for evaluating environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, producing engaging commentary and presentations, and who also has around 3+ years' experience of working in a role in investment or finance. The individual will need to be a team-player who is at ease working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, interacting regularly with senior colleagues, fund managers and analysts and who is focused on delivering high quality insight and analytics to meet the needs of the pertinent audience.


Role Responsibilities

  • Analysing funds' responsible investment performance and producing articulate and engaging commentary on responsible investment issues, as well as preparing ad-hoc analytics to support ongoing investment activity. This would include responsibility for updating and collating key data sources to support the demonstration of portfolio RI performance
  • Conducting regularised and ad-hoc screening of index and fund exposures against RI criteria on behalf of investment desks, analysing and commenting on results
  • Contributing to work developing tools and analytics for enhancing RI integration
  • Producing presentation and marketing materials and communications relating to RI
  • In collaboration with Back Office teams (GRFP, Client Reporting, Distribution), overseeing the preparation and submission of responses from the RI team to RfPs and DDQs that feature an ESG component, and maintaining oversight of submitted responses
  • Supporting the production of any other copy required from time to time relating to RI issues, working in collaboration with team members
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of continuing development programmes for investment desks relating to RI issues
  • Assisting as required in other team activity from time to time, including proxy voting and RI research


Key Capabilities


  • Experience of producing written and graphical analysis to demonstrate financial performance
  • Understanding of key ESG/sustainability risks and opportunities at the sector level
  • Awareness of broader ESG issues and cognisant of developing sustainability themes


  • Good working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to represent the team and organisation in wider industry forums or working groups when relevant
  • Interest in pursuing CFA or Investment Management Certificate (IMC)
  • Familiarity with data manipulation tools other than Excel e.g. Bloomberg, FactSet, Aladdin
  • Familiarity with database creation and management
  • Skills in coding (e.g. Excel VBA, Python, R) would be considered very positively
